I recently watched the Simpsons parody of Harry Met Sally, which brought me back to one of my favourite romance films. The best part of this film, I think, is how real it is. It's not some fairytale romance where they meet once, have some tension, and fall in love; it shows how unexpected love is and how real people fall in love.
I have always heard that good things take time and that it all works out because the universe chooses the perfect timing to get the things you want. I thought it was all bunkum until I saw it happen to me, and the movie epitomizes precisely those values. Both Harry and Sally face disappointment when their relationships don’t work out, but this ultimately leads to better outcomes. The universe wanted them to wait—to become the right people for their soulmates—before finding eaach other, resulting in a relationship that surpasses any previous ones.
Another aspect I love is that they were friends before becoming romantically involved. In a way, they validate Harry’s theory, but the tension builds gradually because they start as friends. When they finally get together, it feels just right. They understand each other deeply, setting a solid foundation for their relationship. Although they face challenges, like Harry’s commitment issues and cynicism, they strive to improve for each other.
The production and script make this movie feel so raw and genuine. The filmmaker drew many elements from his own relationships, influencing the dialogue and characters. This adds a special sweetness, particularly since the director lost his real-life Sally, making this film a way for him to reunite with her and find a happy ending—even if only on-screen.
I could easily create a playlist that captures the essence of this film; it truly feels like a love song brought to life. I also appreciate the slow progression of time in the story; the characters need to evolve into the right people for that kind of love, and when they do, it’s magical. Plus, the scenes of real couples sharing their love stories at the end are the most adorable moments, contributing to the film’s portrayal of a realistic love story.
