I love the Rock. He is an amazing, amazing man. He did some good acting in this film, and I really appreciate him for bringing to life Jumanji. My friends and I used to pretend we were in this film. I wanted to be Ruby Roundhouse so badly. I’d force my funny friends to be Kevin Hart and Jack Black’s characters. I’d even dream about this film. That is the level of obsession I brought.
This film is about a group of teenagers who find the Jumanji video game and get sucked into it. All typical high school stereotypical nerds, jocks, geeks, and cheerleaders have their roles reversed and find themselves into new bodies and playing to escape facing off against hippos, hunters and even cake.
It's funny—it's so funny. The scene where Kevin Hart insults the Rock and gets pushed off a cliff had me rolling on the floor. I truly love their chemistry; the banter is incredible. I’d dare say the chemistry is even better than that between the Rock and Ruby Roundhouse. Not to forget Nick Jonas, who plays a missing kid who had been sucked into the game, almost like Alan Parrish from the first film but you know the teenage hearthrob version. I mean the motorcycle ninjas and Van Pelt were hilarious villains, perfect for a children’s movie. Rewatching it now, I really do get why I loved this film as a kid. I mean the Jaguar’s Eye that sounds like an epic treasure at the end of the film and that Indiana Jones style jungle setting was magical.
The scenes were so hilarious, especially as Jack Black teaches Martha how to be sexy while flouncing around and her final super awkward dance to distract the guards is so funny. Don’t forget that sentimental ending as they all get past their differences and become friends. Very Breakfast Club oriented I’d say but I’ll allow it.
