It is time to revisit one of my favourite teen flicks, Jennifer’s Body. While only being seen by teenage boys and grown Megan Fox fanboys, this film is genuinely iconic.
First I’d just like to talk about the costumes. I mean Jennifer’s outfits are truly iconic, her school wear, cheerleader costume and the prom dress have all gone down as classic college girl Halloween outfits and deservedly so, they’re the epitome of her character- the pretty mean girl.
Second the characters, making Jennifer into this maneater from a regular insecure and scared teenage girl was such a perfect plot. Of course, there would be those that say this is a sexualisation of teenage girls or villainisation of women’s sexuality but to me this is simply a cool teenage flick. The best thing about Jennifer is that she still retains characteristics of her old personality, her love for her best friend and her insecurities (just think of the laxatives reference) and just projects all her hate to men, protecting her best friend. It is a weird form of feminism but I’ll take it.
Her character is even multi-layered I like the suggestion that she may just be in love with her best friend and her love may be manifesting in terms of jealousy. I mean just think of that scene in her bedroom. Considering all this, I think Megan Fox’s acting just becomes that much more impressive. She aces the role of pretty mean girl but brings in this added sexuality and vulnerability to it that I haven’t seen in many other teen flicks.
I even love the ending, Needy going back to hunt the band down and then killing them, getting revenge for her best friend is so fitting and such a satisfying end. Not to forget that iconic scene of her levitating in her prison cell, that suggestion that the demon may still live on in her is such a good cliffhanger.
